Snow Falling On Cedars is with its precise sensitive and psychological descripition of characters and its tensed and partially mystical atmosphere an exceptional book. It can be recommended to everybody, because it offers every reader a variety of topics, so that every person can find something to his liking:
the crime thrillers tension which goes on from the first until the last page; David Guterson confronts us with different social problems as racism, influenced e.g. by the attack on Pearl Harbour or the second world war. Furthermore a heart-rending love story takes place. Therefore the book can grip somebody until the end --despite its 400 pages.
If one analyses the action, one will find out something about the meanings of different symbols as e.g. the snow, the strawberries, the cedars etc. This story can be read under various aspects so that it is impossible to find Guterson's novel too easy, too boring, or too trivial.
We tried to understand and to grasp this book in eight weeks in our "Leistungskurs Englisch 12" in all its aspects. The work turned out to be interesting and exciting, because while we were interpreting it continuously new meanings became exposed, although we were very sceptical at the beginning.
So we can recommend this book to other classes with a clear conscience.
