Manzanar is a place in the eastern part of California, about 50 miles west of the border to Nevada. It's in the deep dessert, with no big city around.
On this map you can see that Manzanar and Tule Lake are the only relocation camps in California.
Manzanar is very close to "Death Valley". This is the hottest place on earth and that means that there are no plants and trees. It is very dry so there are also not many people living there. This means that if you had wanted to escape from the camp you would have been in the middle of nowhere.
